Plot

Sword and Shield’s narrative unfolds within the Galar region, a vast and narrow expanse of land nestled among the many diverse locales in the Pokémon world. Shigeru Ohmori, the game’s director, characterized it as a contemporary setting heavily influenced by Great Britain. This influence is evident in the region’s landmarks, which draw parallels to iconic structures like the Houses of Parliament and the Cerne Abbas Giant. Southward, you’ll discover charming countryside towns boasting quaint cottages and Victorian-style architecture, while the heart of Galar houses a city reminiscent of the Industrial Revolution era, replete with steampunk elements.

Throughout the Galar region, you’ll find a collection of Pokémon Gyms designed to resemble football stadiums, showcasing the transformative power of Dynamaxing and Gigantamaxing, as masterminded by Rose, the Chairman of the Galar Pokémon League. Moving northward, the landscape shifts to a domain dominated by snow-covered mountains, creating a stark contrast to the southern Wild Area. This expansive, open-world area is a haven for a multitude of roaming Pokémon species, offering an ever-changing array of weather conditions.

In a nod to the innovative approach seen in previous games like Pokémon Sun and Moon, many Pokémon from earlier generations, such as Weezing, receive Galarian Forms with unique typings, statistics, and appearances. Additionally, certain Pokémon like Linoone and Meowth undergo regional evolutions, showcasing the region’s distinct influence on their development.
